March with GSA Network at SF Pride
Once again, the GSA Network will be marching in this year's San Francisco Pride Parade, and we're doing
it up with whistles and beads. The first 50 youth to show up will get a FREE whistle and everyone will
get colorful beaded necklaces to pass out to the crowd!

Details are still being determined, but on June 24th, from 9:30-10:30 we will be directing youth from the
corner of Mission and Spear Streets to our lineup spot in the march.

Bring your boas, noisemakers, whistles, signs, and wear your GSA Network t-shirts!

The GSA Network will also have a booth during the festival, so if you'd like to volunteer and help out (or
just look pretty) let us know! Or, if you'd like to help make posters and represent your own schools GSA,
come to our June 10th poster making session. Free food will be provided.

4. From EQCA: Legislative update

Some recent legislation of interest to sexual minority youth, their parents, and the education community
from Equality California (
http://www.eqca.org).

June 4 - Assembly Passes Safe Schools Bill Filling Gaps in California’s Anti-Bias Laws
Lawmakers in the Assembly on Monday approved a measure that would fill in the gaps in California’s
safe schools law, which is designed to keep bias and harassment out of the classroom. With an initial
vote of 45-28, the Assembly passed the Safe Place to Learn Act, authored by Assemblymember Lloyd
Levine, D-Van Nuys, and co-sponsored by Equality California and Asian Americans for Civil Rights and
Equality.

AB 394 requires the California Department of Education to monitor school compliance with an existing
anti-bias law, the California Student Safety and Violence Protection Act of 2000. The law bans all forms of
unlawful discrimination in schools to protect the safety of every student, including those who identify as
lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT).

June 4 - Senate Passes Protections for At-Risk Incarcerated Youth
The California Senate on Monday approved basic safeguards to protect youth residing in juvenile justice
facilities from abuse and mistreatment.

SB 518, the Juvenile Justice Safety and Protection Act, creates a Youth Bill of Rights to protect all young
people from harassment and discrimination, including youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or
transgender (LGBT). Authored by Sen. Carole Migden, D-San Francisco, and sponsored by Equality
California, the measure passed the Senate with a 22-12 vote. SB 518 will be heard next in Assembly
policy committees.

May 24 - Senate Passes Student Civil Rights Act, Protecting All California Students
The California Senate on Monday passed legislation that would protect all California students from
harassment and bias in public schools based on their gender identity or sexual orientation. Legislators
approved SB 777, authored by Sen. Sheila Kuehl, D-Santa Monica, and sponsored by Equality California,
by a 23-13 vote.

The Student Civil Rights Act ensures that all students in publicly-funded schools, including those who
identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT), clearly understand the protections they are
provided under state law. SB 777 creates uniform nondiscrimination standards within the state's
education code and clarifies the responsibility of school officials to ensure a safe learning environment.
